Trees to line the Avenue again

Wednesday 28 November 2018

After getting some stick for removing damaged trees earlier in the year, the States have now arranged for new saplings to be planted on St Julian's Avenue.

A spokesperson for Traffic & Highway Services said this will mean "St Julian’s Avenue is being restored to its former tree-lined glory this week."

There has been some gaps in the trees lining the Avenue for more than a decade and that became more pronounced earlier this year when a small number had to be removed for pedestrian safety.

At the time, Traffic and Highways Services said that several of the trees which line the Avenue had been discovered growing at angles which may risk public safety so the decision was made to remove them. That decision was not universally popular among the public, with many people calling for a return to the former tree lined days of the past.

Now that Traffic and Highway Services has been able to secure funding to replace the missing trees along the road, the work has already started.

In total, nine trees are being replanted along St Julian’s Avenue, while further work will then follow to resurface the areas surrounding the base of the new trees.

As well as the new trees the asphalt around the bases of most of the existing trees in the avenue will be resurfaced to remove any lumps and bumps, with a permeable surface laid to allow surface water to penetrate directly to the roots.

For anyone wondering why the trees are being replanted so late in the year, it's because THS took advice that this is the best time to plant new trees.

Traffic & Highway Services said it would like to "thank Phil Collenette Tree Consultancy for the time and assistance he has provided to this project and Guernsey Trees for Life for funding the replacement trees."
