Traffic looking to clamp down on "excessive" speeds at Morley Corner

Monday 07 June 2021

Traffic calming measures at Morley Corner, Fort Road, have failed to stop dangerous driving in the area, according to authorities, who now want to install road humps to reduce "excessive" speeds.

Two raised tables have been proposed following "a long history of road traffic collisions", many of which Traffic & Highways Services said have been "serious" in nature.

The speed of vehicles on approach and through the corner has been identified as the main cause of RTCs at this location. Since 2017, a number of less intrusive road safety initiatives have been tried out, including LED road studs to assist drivers at night (when most RTCs have occurred) and additional signage, including electronic signs which tell drivers to slow down.

Sadly, the measures we have implemented so far have proven unsuccessful," said Senior Traffic Officer Mark Brockway.

"A number of vehicles are still being recorded taking the corner at excessive speeds and often without taking account of the road geometry and driving conditions.

Pictured: Mr Brockway said the proposed raised tables are proven to reduce speed-related RTCs.

If approved, each raised table will be 5m in length and up to 75mm in height, with a 1m long ramp on each side. One raised table will be located just south of the junction with Courtil Colin. The other raised table will be located 46m to the south of Fermain Road junction.

A public consultation period has now opened for a period of 21 days, ending on Monday 28 June 2021.

Anybody who wants to submit their views can do so by emailing traffic@gov.gg or writing to the Senior Traffic Officer, Traffic & Highway Services, PO Box 145, Bulwer Avenue, St Sampson, GY2 4LR.
