Three stars booked for 2023’s Literary Festival

Thursday 19 January 2023

Veteran journalist Jon Snow, Countdown’s Susie Dent, and TV presenter Dan Walker have been booked for the 2023 Guernsey Literary Festival, which kicks off in May.

All three will hold talks discussing their new publications and much more.

Mr Snow traces the changing nature of society across his five decades in journalism in his book ‘The State of Us – The Good News and the Bad News’.

Ranging from getting thrown out of university for protesting apartheid, to interviewing every Prime Minister since Margaret Thatcher, Mr Snow delves into social progress and our unwillingness to confront inequality.

Ms Dent will explore the real, and rarely used, words that describe human emotions in ‘An Emotional Dictionary – Real Words for How we Feel, from Angst to Zwodder’.

The shock of jumping into icy water – curglaff - and the longing for food that someone else is eating – groaking – will be explored as well as many others.

Mr Walker celebrates some of Britain’s quiet heroes in ‘Standing on the Shoulders – Incredible Heroes and How They Inspire Us’. Ordinary people with incredible stories of kindness and compassion feature.

All three speakers will appear at St. James Concert Hall: Mr Snow on 11 May and Ms Dent and Mr Walker on 13 May.

The Festival, now established as one of the biggest annual arts events in the Channel Islands, will feature more than 50 events in five days from 10 to 14 May, including a full education and community programme.

Full details of the events will be in the programme launched in early March and delivered to every Guernsey household, as well as on the Festival website where tickets will be available.

Festival members will be able to buy tickets a week ahead, and details of membership are also online.

Volunteers are being sought to help steward events and to meet and transport guest speakers. Those interested should email volunteers@guernseyliteraryfestival.com

Any organisation wanting to sponsor an event should contact Festival Director Claire Allen at director@guernseyliteraryfestival.com.
