Third covid-19 death confirmed, while 27 patients have recovered

Sunday 05 April 2020

A third elderly patient has died after testing positive for corona virus in Guernsey.

The Director of Public Health said they were in their 80s, as she passed her condolences to the patient's family.

The other two victims of covid-19 in the Bailiwick were also described as being in their 80s, although Doctor Nicola Brink did say that people of all ages are being affected by the illness locally, with three infants under one-year old among those testing positive.

The average age for patients so far has been 57 for men and 54 for women, with slightly more men testing positive than women.

The latest statistics from the States (released 17:00, Sunday 5 April) have also shown that 27 patients have now tested negative having previously been diagnosed positive for the virus.

More than 1,000 tests have now been carried out, but more than 80 people are still waiting for their results.

As the news of the third fatality was confirmed, Dr Nicola Brink said:

"I am very sorry to report that a patient who tested positive for COVID-19 sadly passed away over the weekend. The patient was in their 80s.

"I offer my sincere condolences to their family and friends and ask that their privacy is respected at this extremely sad time."

With the news of a third death likely to add to the already high level of concern among the community about the virus spreading, Public Health Services said it "confirms the stark reality that, for some this virus is extremely dangerous, even if for the majority it causes relatively mild symptoms".

Deputy Heidi Soulsby, President of the Committee for Health & Social Care said the latest information confirmed locally continues to be available at gov.gg and she wants anyone with relatives or friends who don't have access to the internet to share the information with them too.

"I am sure the community will join me in offering condolences to the family and friends affected by this sad news.

"Support for Islanders mental wellbeing at this time, along with information about death and grieving during these unprecedented times is available to view at gov.gg/coronavirus.

"Please share this information with family and friends who don’t have easy access to the internet."
