Temporary traffic lights "until third week of June"

Thursday 28 May 2020

Temporary traffic lights at St George's Esplanade are expected to stay in place until the third week of June because of roadside repairs.

The traffic lights were put up earlier this month and with Town traffic increasing as Guernsey moves through the lockdown exit phases and more businesses return to work, there has been increased congestion at peak times.

That is anticipated to remain the case for a further few weeks while roadside repairs are carried out.

"The temporary traffic signals in operation at St George’s Esplanade are due to roadside works that are being undertaken to repair the pedestrian footpath for Traffic & Highway Services," said a spokesperson for THS.

"THS had received a number of complaints about both the uneven surface in this section of footpath and the poor drainage in the area. While these issues needed to be addressed, it was recognised the work was likely to cause significant delays to traffic. As such we decided to take the opportunity to do the works during this period of reduced traffic."

The project involves the replacement of a 40m section of the pedestrian footpath.

Asked when the work is expected to be completed by, THS said it is currently expected to continue until the middle of June.

"THS staff are liaising with our contractors on a daily basis, in relation to both the works themselves and the traffic management impact of the temporary traffic signals, in order that signal timings can be changed as needed to enable the best traffic flow past the works," said the spokesperson.

"Due to the complexity of the works, which involve relaying a section of granite flagstone footpath and drainage, it is currently anticipated that the temporary traffic signals will be in place until the third week of June.

"The scaffolding on the nearby property, which is necessary whilst repairs are carried out on a chimney, does not extend beyond the edge of the pedestrian footpath, and there remains a 1.2m wide pedestrian walkway underneath the scaffolding."
