Teenager's funeral today following meningitis death

Thursday 26 April 2018

The family and friends of a teenager who died after contracting meningitis will honour him today with a funeral service at St James.

Joseph Gray - known as Joe - passed away on Thursday 12 April while being treated in the Intensive Care Unit at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital.

In a family notice published by his parents; Samantha and Joseph Gray said the funeral would be held at St James on Thursday 26 April at 13:00.

In a statement released in the days after his death, Joe's parents also said his family have been left "devastated and in a state of huge shock" but said they were comforted by all those who had shown them support.

The teenager was first admitted to hospital on Sunday 8 April and his parents thanked the staff who cared for him saying they went "above and beyond."

The full statement from Joe Gray's family, which was first published on Monday 16 April, is below:

The funeral service is expected to be well attended, with friends from various secondary schools across the island due to attend to pay their respects. Joe's family have asked for any donations in his memory to be sent to the Ernie's Angels charity, set up in memory of Ernie Backlund-Leale.
