Express has launched a survey to gauge islanders’ feelings of safety and whether they have experienced sexual harassment in the Channel Islands.
The death of 33-year-old Sarah Everard in South London - combined with the findings of a recent YouGov survey exposing the extent of sexual harassment against women in the UK - have prompted thousands of women to take to social media to share their views.
On Tuesday evening, a vigil was held locally to help give a voice to victims and to highlight the need for everyone to help combat gendered violence.
Express is now launching a survey to ask islanders about their experience of sexual harassment in the island and their feelings towards safety. It includes 11 questions, covers both the Bailiwick of Guernsey and Jersey, and allows people to respond anonymously.
The Bailiwick of Guernsey Victim Support and Witness Service, which is Bailiwick Express' charity partner for 2021, is supporting the survey.
"We are very much aware that the number of reported incidents of sexual assault and harassment is just the tip of the iceberg and that there are many more members of our community who have had similar experiences," said Manager Deborah Robinson.
"The results of this survey will provide a more accurate picture of the prevalence of these incidents and may also provide further evidence that a Bailiwick of Guernsey Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) is desperately needed.”
