Sure apologises for disruption during Royal visit, including livestream issues

Wednesday 17 July 2024

Sure has apologised for service disruption during the Royal visit, which most notably led to the States livestream being impacted.

A livestream was provided online for members of the public who were unable to make it into Town during the visit of His Majesty King Charles II.

The broadcast was unfortunately plagued with glitches as the feed dropped out consistently throughout the day.

We share people’s disappointment over the disruption to the livestream which was provided by a third party supplier,” the States of Guernsey have since said.

The supplier had taken mitigating actions, with more than one contingency, to account for the additional pressure on the network from the very large crowds on the seafront

However these were unfortunately and unexpectedly not effective resulting in the stream being interrupted.

We are today sharing an extended highlights film on social media and www.gov.gg/royalvisit2024 so anyone who missed the events of the day can find them online.

Members of the public in some areas of Town also lost connectivity on Sure’s network, and the Telecom has now revealed that demand on its network was greater than expected.

“The demand on our network during yesterday’s Royal Visit was much greater than we had anticipated, resulting in some customers having issues accessing data services in the Town area,” a spokesperson said.

“We saw 15,000 users attached to our three sites that cover the seafront between 10am and 2pm, a 50% increase on the average number of around 10,000 users.

“1 terabyte (1,000,000 megabytes) of data was consumed during this time period, which is 300 gigabytes (300,000 megabytes) more than an average day.

“We apologise to anyone who couldn’t access their data as normal during the Royal Visit, especially those who tuned into the livestream, and hope everyone still enjoyed seeing Their Majesties.”
