Former President of the States of Alderney, Stuart Trought, will be awarded an MBE next year for his services to the island.

He stepped down in May after eight years in the role.

He told Express he was "thrilled and honoured" to have been recognised in Her Majesty The Queen's New Year Honours List for 2020.

"It has been an honour and a privilege to represent the people of Alderney for eight years," he continued, "and I think this is a reflection of the respect and esteem in which the island is held."

Mr Trought looked back at some of Alderney's successes over the past few years, including the improvement of the island's relationships with other jurisdictions.

"Some of the successes we have had include stabilising the relationship with Jersey which we haven't had since the war," he explained. "We've got a greatly improved profile in the UK and have a very good relationship with the Ministry of Justice now.

"Most importantly, from the President's view as it is a non-political role, we have a very good relationship with Guernsey.

"Guernsey has been extremely helpful during my time as President. For example, we set up the Bailiwick Council to deal with issues that affect the whole Bailiwick, including Sark as well.

"Our relationships with France have come on hugely and we've been visited, officially and unofficially, by the Presidents of Normandy.

"It's really about the improvements of our relationships with our neighbours."
