Strikes and storms in St Malo mean Condor disruption

Saturday 06 January 2018

Condor Ferries has announced further changes to its freight and passenger sailings this weekend, due to continued stormy weather and ongoing industrial action in St Malo’s ports.

The Liberation was cancelled on Friday, but is set to operate an additional rotation to Poole and the Channel Islands today, and the Rapide is also operating an additional route this morning from St Malo to Jersey ahead of its scheduled dry dock. The freight vessel Goodwill will be operating to the Channel Islands only today.

Paul Luxon, Condor Ferries’ CEO, said he was disappointed that continued high waves and winds along with the ongoing industrial negotiations in St Malo were affecting services between the Channel Islands, the UK and France.

“We are dismayed that these factors, which are beyond our control, are once again, disrupting passengers and freight customers’ shipments and we understand they will naturally be very disappointed,” he said. “As islanders, we have all seen the damage caused by Storm Eleanor this week and I know that the impact has been felt both in St Malo and on the English south coast too."

“Condor Ferries is determined to minimise the effect these challenges have on passengers’ travel plans and our freight customers’ cargo shipments. Commodore Clipper and Commodore Goodwill are both operating between the Channel Islands and the UK in very high seas and windy conditions in ports to keep the islands connected and supplied. Both ships have, unsurprisingly, picked up delays due to the adverse weather conditions throughout the past week. Customer-facing teams are contacting all those affected to advise them of alternative travel options.”

SMM (St Malo Manutention) is the stevedoring company that provides services for both freight and passengers in St Malo port, and they have been facing industrial action with their port staff which is also affecting the scheduled sailings.

Similar protests took place last November and December, and also disrupted Condor’s services.
