States' covid-19 briefing tonight

Tuesday 14 December 2021

The Civil Contingencies Authority is holding a covid-19 public briefing at 18:00 tonight at which it says it will be "making announcements about the latest data and measures in response to omicron".

The briefing, announced this morning, follows news late yesterday of another fall in the number of covid-19 cases in the Bailiwick alongside a very gradual increase in the number of cases of the recently-discovered omicron variant about which there remains much uncertainty globally.

At 17:25 yesterday, there were 723 known active cases of covid-19 after a weekend in which 243 new cases were identified and 326 people were considered recovered. Three of the 723 infected people have the omicron variant. There are currently three people in hospital related to covid-19.

In total, there have now been 5,229 cases of covid-19 in the Bailiwick since the first case was discovered in March 2020. But the average number of cases over a rolling seven-day period has been gradually falling for the past few days.

The Chairman of the Authority, Deputy Peter Ferbrache, is expected to lead tonight's briefing and is expected to be alongside the Medical Officer of Health, Dr Nicola Brink, and the Director of Education, Nick Hynes. The media have been invited to attend but for the first time in months the briefing will be held online rather than in person.

The UK has just re-introduced stricter measures and firmer advice in an effort to reduce the increasing transmission of the omicron variant. On Sunday, the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, said: "No one should be in any doubt - there is a tidal wave of omicron coming."

The isolation requirements - set out above - are stricter than people have become familiar with for other variants of the virus.

More information about isolation requirements is available on the States' website HERE.
