States estate damage being assessed

Thursday 02 November 2023

Storm Ciaran has caused damage to Guernsey's harbour, airport, hospital and other States owned buildings and facilities.

Inspections are underway at the time of writing with States Property Services and staff at the various sites checking to see what the extent of the damage has been.

The roof of the maternity unit at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital was damaged when a "corrugated plastic roof panel in one of the corridors popped out".

There was no risk to anyone on the ward with all patients and staff remaining where they were.

The hospital is continuing to operate as normal although some non essential clinics were cancelled yesterday ahead of the storm hitting the islands.

Preventative work had also been undertaken at Guernsey Airport before it closed yesterday with engineers strapping already damaged sections of the roof down.

It's not yet known what additional damage has been caused but the airport is not due to open until 10:00 Friday at the earliest after safety checks have been carried out.

In the north of the island, there was some damage around the Mont Cuet tip site with some flooding and fences down.

Staff at Guernsey Dairy were on site this morning and many have nearly finished their shifts for the day meaning that the island's milk supplies have been maintained with stock to be distributed to shops when it is safe to do so.

More to come...
