The Arts Society Guernsey launches its programme of monthly lectures this evening, starting with ‘Broken by Life: The Paintings of van Gogh’.
To accommodate for the difficulties of the pandemic, the entire lecture series will forgo the physical presence of lecturers, instead broadcasting them to an audience at Les Cotils via Zoom.
Vincent van Gogh sold only one painting in his lifetime, but today he is one of the most celebrated artists in the world, and the fascination with his personal life is unrivalled.
Art History lecturer and writer Stella Grace Lyons will unpack the relationship between his life and his life’s work from 19:00 this evening, exploring how his paintings reflect his changing state of mind. The presentation, and several others, will also be delivered to several local schools the day after their Cotils session.
Other presentations will explore topics such as Japanese art, the Guernsey connections of Rupert Bear, and the family at the heart of the Renaissance.
