St John's Ambulance youth take on CPR marathon

Sunday 13 October 2024

The youth section of St John's Ambulance - the Badgers and Cadets - are set to take on a CPR marathon to mark World Restart A Heart Day.

On Tuesday 15 October, teams of the young volunteers and their parents will learn and perform CPR for the duration of their entire weekly session.

Marking World Restart A Heart Day - held annually on Wednesday 16 October - the event aims to highlight the staggering statistics that CPR and defribrilation can more than double survival rates of cardiac arrests, of which only 10% of people survive out of hospital.

The Badgers and Cadets will take it in turns to perform CPR in groups non-stop over a few hours, starting after 17:00 at the Rohais training hall.

Led by the senior leaders of the St John charity they aim to raise £1,000 for its youth section.

"CPR is one of the greatest skills a person can learn” said Heather Langlois, Chief Executive of the St John charity. “The CPR marathon aims to highlight the statistics around the survivability of out of hospital sudden cardiac arrests and educate people on how they can make a difference.

"Our Badgers and Cadets will work together in teams made up of their family members and senior leaders of the St John Guernsey organisation to raise both community awareness and vital funds.”
