Spinathon to raise thousands for bowel cancer awareness

Tuesday 23 January 2018

A now annual event will raise thousands of pounds again this year for a local charity.

The organiser, Lyndsay Simon, has chosen Bowel Cancer Guernsey as the beneficiary of a six hour spinning marathon this coming weekend.

The event, at Beau Sejour on Saturday 27 January, will see the leisure centre's regular instructors including Mark Wylie and Dave Collins, lead hour long sessions on the bikes with some people doing the whole six hours with only short breaks in between.

Others will do one hour at a time, from 10:30, donating a minimum of £10 each per hour to take part.

The previous spinathons have proven to be very popular and successful, helping raise funds for charities including Guernsey PND Society in 2017. That event raised more than £2,300 in total with Miss Simon saying she was overwhelmed with everyone's generosity: "especially with people who have wanted to be involved and who I didn't know prior to the event. My thanks go out to everyone who donated or got involved, no matter how small, you have made a real difference to an under publicised Charity, whilst raising a massive amount of awareness at the same time".

Many of the people who took part in the previous spinathons are also signed up for this year but there are some gaps for anyone keen to be involved.

Miss Simon chose Bowel Cancer Guernsey for this year's beneficiary saying it is a very worthwhile cause. The spinathon also co-incides with other fund and awareness raising initiatives for the charity.

Friday 26 January is Loud Tie Day, an annual fundraiser for the charity:

The Chair of Bowel Cancer Guernsey, Anne Brouard, said: "We are extremely grateful that Lyndsay chose us as her charity this year and we want to congratulate her on organising six hours of spinning, what an amazing achievement!

"As we all know a healthy lifestyle and keeping fit is crucial for good bowel health, even just going for a walk every day can help".
