Soroptimists mark 40 years
Saturday 20 June 2020
Lady Corder will be planting a tree at Cambridge Park today to mark the 40th anniversary of Guernsey Soroptimists as the move into phase 5 of the lockdown exit means most of their celebrations can go ahead as planned.
The Guernsey branch is part of a global women's voluntary organisation which has close to 80,000 members in more than 3,000 Clubs in over 100 countries around the world.
They aim to "inspire action and create opportunities to transform the lives of women and girls through a global network of members and international partnerships" and are "committed to a world where women and girls together achieve their individual and collective potential, realise aspirations and have an equal voice in creating strong and peaceful communities worldwide".
The Guernsey branch had planned to have a parade through town to mark the anniversary and the centenary since women in Guernsey were given the vote.
That isn't going ahead but the tree planting, from 14:00 at Cambridge Park is, along with a celebratory afternoon tea at Les Cotils.
Local President Sally Evans said the event will represent the friendship and aims of the group and its members.
"Soroptimist International Guernsey are delighted to be able to go ahead with events to mark the 40th Anniversary of their Charter as part of Soroptimist International; a global organisation with representation on the United Nations Council. Our aim is to inspire action and create opportunities to transform the lives of women and girls both locally and internationally.
"We are honoured to have Lady Corder to plant a tree in Cambridge Park to commemorate the event and then join us for a celebratory tea at Les Cotils. Our members are spread over six decades and our theme this year is People Partnerships and the Planet. We support a diverse range of charities and pressure groups and welcome any one to join us for friendship and the power to make a difference both on our island and throughout the world."
