Something for everyone at La Société Open Day

Thursday 25 August 2022

La Société Guernesiaise will be hosting an Open Day on Sunday [28 August] for the organisation to showcase its work.

President Roy Bisson said the Open Day will be an opportunity for the public to learn more about the organisation, saying that "not all the sections are generally known".

"La Société has been recording and investigating local nature and science for 140 years, so the open day is a chance for people to learn more about what we do and how to get involved if they'd like to," said Mr Bisson.

Mr Bisson continued: "Everyone is welcome to come and we will have some activities for children to get involved. It will be a family friendly, free event."

The Open Day will include the different sections of the Société describing their work, including archeology, astronomy, bats, botany, education, family history, owls and ornithology sections. There will also be a books and publications stall.

There will be children's games, challenges, food and drink, a kid's roundabout and free parking. Nature Guernsey will also be hosting guided bird walks, bug hunts and moth trapping as part of the event.

Founded in 1882, the group "encourages the study of the history, natural history, geography and geology of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, the conservation of the Bailiwick’s natural environment and the preservation of its historic buildings and monuments. In many respects, La Société Guernesiaise is similar to the UK Wildlife Trusts".

Naturalist, nature photographer, television presenter and author, Chris Packham, previously said of the group: "La Société plays a vital part in protecting and enhancing Guernsey’s natural environment and its biodiversity. I would encourage all islanders to join up as a member to enable this important work to continue.”

A spokesperson for the group added: "La Société fulfils a valuable role by providing advice to States of Guernsey Departments and answers questions about the Bailiwick from individuals and institutions worldwide.

"La Société also runs the Guernsey Biological Records Centre which was founded in January 2003. It is a partnership between the States of Guernsey, Environment Department and La Société Guernesiaise through its environmental consultancy company Guernsey Environmental Services Ltd. It holds biological data primarily for the Bailiwick of Guernsey, but with some from the Bailiwick of Jersey, the Chausey Islands and the adjacent French coast."

The Open day will be held at Pleinmont Headland on Sunday [28 August] from 09:00 to 16:00 (Nature Guernsey events from 09:00, La Société events from 10:00.)
