Snooker stars competing in UK

Saturday 22 October 2022

Local snooker stars Kate Le Gallez and Annie Wilkins are in Glasgow this weekend for the Scottish Women's Open.

It is the first time in almost 20 years that Scotland will host a World Women's Snooker event. It runs across Saturday and Sunday at the Q Club in the heart of the city.

Players start in groups of four. Le Gallez and Wilkins are in different groups. Their progress can be followed HERE.

Le Gallez, the world number 27, has only one player in her group who is ranked higher than she is - Peckham's Connie Stephens. The group also includes a 14 year old, Laura Killington, and South Korea's Jeongmin Park.

Wilkins' group includes Killington's 16 year old sister, Zoe, a finalist in the 2022 UK Challenge Cup, China's Lynn Shi and World Women's Snooker debutant Keerath Bhandaal.

Wilkins, the world number 40, will also compete in the tournament's Seniors' Open at the same time. She is seeded second in the Seniors' Open and has a place in the quarter finals.

Two of the island's leading men of recent years will also be in national action over the next few days.

Martyn Desperques and Adam Shorto will participate in the latest rounds of The 900 – a new competition for amateurs based largely on the single-frame shoot out format popular in the early days of televised snooker and revived in the professional game in recent years.

The 900 is played at the Crucible Club in Reading. It features 96 players.

Nine-times Channel Islands Champion Aaron Canavan has already made it through to the final stages of the tournament in November.

The 900 event can be followed on the channel SportyStuffTV, which is available on SKY 437, Freesat 250 and Freeview 264.
