Slipway damage still under review

Wednesday 27 February 2019

Months after the slipway near Castle Cornet was damaged in stormy weather, the area remains closed off until further notice, with no date set for any repair works.

Last November, strong winds battered the Bailiwick leaving a lasting hangover, which included structural damage to the Havelet slipway.

Fences were put at the top of the slipway at the time as the huge cracks which had appeared in the slipway needed to be checked before public access could be restored.

Guernsey Harbours said at the time that it would be "assessing the damage caused to vital infrastructure" during the storm.

While there was damage caused in other places along the east coast, the Havelet slipway "bore the brunt of the winds and very strong tidal currents, with the structure suffering considerable damage," said Guernsey Harbours. "As a result, the slipway is now closed to the public and port users for the foreseeable future."

States Property Services were tasked to work on the survey and any repairs with the Harbourmaster, Captain David Barker.

Now, Captain Barker has said the slipway "will be closed until further notice due to storm damage.

"The slipway surface and coping stones are unstable, unsafe and should not be used under any circumstances."

A Guernsey Harbours spokesman also said the area hasn't suffered any more damage since the storms last November, but it remains unsafe.

"To date, it has not suffered from any more weather related issues. The Local Notices to Mariners notice was published to remind all maritime users the structure is unsafe to use and is closed until further notice."

The spokesman said States Property Services will authorise any repair work once they've worked out what can be done.

"Guernsey Harbours is working with States Property Services to examine the future repair options for the site. Until that assessment has been carried out and completed, we are unable to estimate costs of the repairs or refurbishment of the structure.”
