The transformation of Guernsey's former Slaughterhouse has won approval almost a year after it opened as a restaurant.
The 2017 Guernsey Design Awards were handed out last night with the designers behind the look of the Slaughterhouse restaurant winning the Heritage title.
Tyrell Dowinton Associates and R.G. Falla Ltd were behind the redevelopment of the building which cost millions of pounds and was met with some public disapproval from a handful of members of the public who didn't want to dine at a restaurant inside a former abattoir. However, the business has been busy since opening in early 2017 and now the architects have been praised for the work.

R.G. Falla also won in the Non-Residential (over 250K) category; for its work with Lovell Ozanne & Partners on The Ladies College, Wessex Wing; the Outstanding Landscaping Design group for Maison De La Falaise Landscaping which it completed with Welch Landscape Design & CCD Architects and in the Outstanding Community Design category for its work on La Nouvelle Maraitaine which was in partnership with PRP Architects LLP & Create Limited.
The People’s Choice Award was given to Le Mont Saint Farm for its "innovative renovation and conservation of its listed farm and barn buildings" with the winner of this category being chosen by the general public from a short-list of entrants compiled by the Design Awards judges. The panel was made up of members from sponsors Norman Piette, the Planning Service and the Guernsey Society of Architects (GSA).

Paul Rogers, the Managing Director of Norman Piette said he was astonished by the high level of creative talent that presents itself each year:
"Yet again Guernsey has demonstrated it can punch well above its weight when it comes to looking for creative design. The island has always been restricted by the amount of land available, yet year on year our architects and contractors show extremely impressive standards of innovative thinking and design finesse. Norman Piette is honoured to continue its long-standing association with this industry and we congratulate all the entrants and winners on some exemplary projects."
Mitch Sneddon, President of the GSA added: "Since the Guernsey Design awards were re-launched in 2011 the standard of the submitted entries has continued to excel year on year, with each year throwing up different challenges for the judges.
"The Design Awards showcases the diverse range of buildings being designed and constructed in Guernsey, highlighting the high quality of architectural design available on the island. The tradition of exemplary buildings submitted for the Design awards continues this year with a large number of high quality buildings being put before the judging panel."
Planning Service Director of Planning, Jim Rowles also commented: "The Planning Service is delighted to be one of the partners in the Design Awards and thoroughly supports this excellent opportunity to showcase great design on the Island. It also shows how public and private partnerships can get best value without using taxpayers’ money. It’s great to see how the hard work of the Planning Service and the Development & Planning Authority in implementing States Planning Policy allows innovative buildings to be built in the right places and the recognition that input from all our teams adds value to the finished design. All the shortlisted buildings are a fantastic reflection of our time and the distinctiveness of Guernsey. They are all buildings of great quality, which we can be proud to pass on to future generations. The winners are truly exceptional.’’
The other award winners in the competition, which honours distinctive, original, inspirational and sustainable design, were decided by the judging panel are listed below. The projects were judged on "the overall quality of design, use of materials, the relationship to setting, sustainability and adherence to the client brief" with criteria for entry based on: new buildings, extensions, restoration projects, lighting schemes, public art projects and works to protected buildings and monuments.
