Skatepark spruce up seeks to serve up extra offering

Plans are being developed to upgrade the skatepark behind Beau Sejour with one idea being a new raised viewing platform.

Architecture and Design practice StudiO are behind the plans to upgrade the current facilities with a new and improved skate hut, which will feature a tuck shop, servery, and chill-out space.

There is still a need to raise some money to pay for the project, with more potential backers invited to get in touch, but the collaboration between Guernsey Skateparks and StudiO hopes to upgrade the offering the skatepark provides.

The Practice said the skatepark “currently features a basic, dated hut, used for storing equipment and serving drinks and snacks," adding that "facilities for spectators are limited to a few open-air benches with a limited view of the skatepark itself.”

StudiO Founder and RIBA Chartered Architect, Oliver Westgarth highlighted the impact that Guernsey’s Skatepark has, saying they want to add to it.

“We love getting involved in community projects like this. Guernsey has lots of top-notch facilities for mainstream sports like football and hockey, but alternative sports like skating or surfing don’t always get the same attention.

“It’s well documented that skateboarding improves mental health, fosters community, and promotes diversity and resilience.

"The skatepark is a hub for people of all ages – especially young people who may not naturally gravitate towards team sports – and they deserve a quality facility that lives up to their dedication and enthusiasm. We’re happy to be doing our bit to deliver something that Guernsey can be proud of.”

RIBA Chartered Architect Doug Langlois is the brain behind the plans, which also hopes to add a raised viewing terrace, which will make it much easier for spectators to watch.

“The skatepark is already a fantastic local resource, enjoyed by hundreds of people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds," said Mr Langlois.

"What’s lacking at the moment are adequate facilities for skaters and spectators. We’re working closely with Tim Gaudion from Guernsey Skateparks to make sure our design delivers exactly what’s needed.”

The Head of Guernsey Skateparks Tim Gaudion said the plans are looking good with some great ideas.

“We’re pleased to be working with StudiO to improve our facilities at Jubilee," he said. "Doug has some great ideas and we’re excited to see them develop and take shape as the project progresses.”
