Blanchelande College is going to offer a new professional cookery course tailored for Sixth Form students.

From September students will be able to take on a Level 3 Extended Certificate in Professional Cookery, the only full-time post 16 catering qualification on island.

The course is designed to help open the door to careers including becoming a chef, working in food photography and product development or marketing and advertising.

The qualification is a hands-on practical course and will count towards points for a University UCAS application and is offered thanks for the college’s link with the Leiths Academy School. 

Alan Sillett, the President of the Guernsey Hospitality Association, said the introduction of the course was a valuable step for the industry. 

The Leith Academy School is well respected worldwide, so this is a very welcome and positive initiative that will assist local students learn the necessary skills required to work in a professional kitchen, and also benefit our hospitality industry. 

The course has been sponsored by Sarnia Hotels group and Balthazar. 

Karel Harris, Managing Director at Sarnia Hotels group, said: “The course fulfils a need in the industry to inspire and deliver the next generation of on-island talent into hospitality careers. It will not only enrich a student’s own culinary knowledge, but potentially contribute to the vitality and growth of the future of the catering industry on island. 

The course ends at Easter of the Upper Sixth year allowing time to prepare for A-Level examinations.
