“If things continue at this rate, we can expect nearly double the number of clients by the end of the year,” said CAB’s Interim Chief Executive, Annie Ashmead. 

“This is clearly becoming an increasingly serious problem and needs to be addressed.” 

CAB is a charity registered in Guernsey that offers free impartial advice to people struggling with difficult financial and personal situations. 

“Considering we are in a cost-of-living crisis, it is not surprising that we are seeing more people struggling to pay their rent and more people wanting to get themselves on the waiting list for social housing,” continued Mrs Ashmead. 

The main issued facing people in Guernsey, highlighted by CAB, is the lack of private rental properties. They are either too expensive or landlords are kicking out tenants to sell the property on. 

“There has been an extraordinary rise in the number of people living alone in single-person households,” said Mrs Ashmead. 

“This is one of the most significant social changes of the modern world. This trend not only risks people feeling lonely but can also lead to health risks associated with social isolation.  

“In light of the research and taking on board ideas from others around the world, now may be the time to consider more creative and alternative housing solutions to help solve Guernsey’s housing crisis.”
