SECONDHAND SEPTEMBER: Going, going, gone!

Friday 22 September 2023

With charities often receiving designer items or rare goods in among donations many are turning to auctions to maximise the audience for their sales.

GO held an auction earlier this week with paintings of local scenes, cinema artefacts such as Star Wars figurines, and a VW camper van among the lots.

Les Bourgs Hospice is following with its own auction tomorrow - with first edition books, ornaments and valuable toys among the goods going under the hammer.

Hospice Enterprises Manager Catherine Boughay says many high-net worth items have been donated including Hermes scarves, luxury watches and collectibles such as coins and stamps.

“Everything has come to us via our charity shop. We regularly receive valuable items that we recognise could bring in substantial funds when auctioned," she said.

"There will be a whole range of lots including, designer handbags, ceramics, rare coins, jewellery, Lego sets, fine art and Hermes scarves plus much more! We want to be able to maximise how much we can raise for these very special items.”

Being held at Les Cotils from 10:00, with viewings from 09:00, the auction is free to attend with the hope that it will generate lots of money to pay for the running costs at the hospice.

The first-ever 'Les Bourgs Hospice Treasure Trove Auction' is going to be run by Trevor Cooper - of estate agents Cooper Brouard.

"With all the auction programmes currently on television there will be many islanders who will want to experience the excitement of a live auction.

"We welcome anyone wishing to support Les Bourgs to come along and make a bid as the drama unfolds."

Ms Boughay said she thinks the auction has captured people's imaginations already.

“It’s wonderful to have Cooper Brouard onboard as Trevor is a very experienced auctioneer, so we are excited to see how the Guernsey public react to this inaugural event.

“We need to raise £1.6 million each year to meet our running costs, so all funds raised will go towards us being able to continue to deliver the high standard of service that we are known for, to those that need it most.”

As well as being kinder on the pocket, it is aimed at helping to fight the climate crisis by reducing the world's dependence on fabric production by encouraging us to reduce, reuse and recycle clothes and other textiles.
