Scaffolding to come down from Castle Lighthouse

Monday 14 August 2023

The Castle Lighthouse refurbishment project is coming to an end, with the scaffolding surrounding the iconic building set to be dismantled this week.

The entire building has been repointed and “extensive repair works” have also been carried out.

Guernsey Ports said the lantern and the top of the tower (the cupola) has been entirely rebuilt using traditional materials to retain its original appearance.

“The covering has now been removed from around the scaffolding and the light has been fitted inside the lantern,” said Head of Technical and Estate Services at Ports, Martyn Stanfield.

“Contractors are due on site this week to complete the removal of the scaffolding. Once removed, the scaffolding will be transferred across the harbour by the Sarnia workboat due to the weight restrictions on the Castle Bridge," continued Mr Stanfield.

“The project has gone very well, although the work plan has been extended due to unseen corrosion in the lantern’s structure, and weather delays, as the lighthouse is in a very exposed location.

“We are very pleased with the work which is a credit to the Ports’ Technical Services team and our contractors.”
