Saumarez Park welcomes pirates

Sunday 02 September 2018

An afternoon of pirate themed fun was held at Saumarez Park as a local business donated a new oak tree bench to the children's play area.

Saffery Champness hosted an afternoon of pirate storytelling in the park last week to celebrate its donation to the Friends of Saumarez Park charity which has organised and funded the revamp of the play area over the last few years.

The event saw John Gaisford, a Living History actor and GADOC regular, entertaining children and their parents, while dressed as his well-loved character Pirate Black-Jack.

The Friends of Saumarez Park Playground Charity Chairman Zef Eisenberg was there to enjoy the event which was enjoyed by "a variety of local rapscallions."

He said, “the bench is a very welcome addition to the playground and we’re very grateful for the donation. The storytelling afternoon was a wonderful success and we hope children and parents will continue enjoying the bench for many years to come.”

Saffery Champness, which donated the bench, takes its role in the Guernsey community very seriously and has raised considerable funds through its partnership with various charitable causes.

Their most well-known event is the Saffery Rotary Walk which is one of the island's largest fundraising events and has supported a number of charitable causes. Over the past 21 years a total of over £700,000 has been raised, with last year’s 20th anniversary walk raising a record-breaking £75,000 for 28 local charities and organisations.

Managing Director Nick Batiste said, “it’s really important to us that we support and celebrate local charities and community initiatives wherever we can. The bench in Saumarez Park Playground was a modest donation but we can see it benefitting everyone who goes to the park and it was highly rewarding to be able to help the Friends of Saumarez Park to put on a fun afternoon of pirate storytelling for local children.”
