Sark has had a complicated relationship with elections in recent years.

A contested election was held in 2023, but before that there hadn't been one for five years as the number of candidates either matched the number of vacant seats or was lower than the number of seats available.

The reluctance of some people to stand as Conseiller has been tackled in the past with efforts to encourage younger people to stand.

In total there should be 18 elected members of Chief Pleas, with half selected every two years to serve a four-year term.

Since 2008, elections have been held to democratically choose the members of Chief Pleas, with voters eligible to be enrolled on the electoral roll is they are at least 16 years old, ordinarily resident in Sark for at least two years, and are not subject to certain legal disabilities.

Prior to 2008, Chief Pleas was mainly populated by the island's tenants.
