Royal Mail strikes could impact islanders

Wednesday 17 August 2022

Guernsey Post has issued advice to islanders ahead of the upcoming scheduled Royal Mail strikes.

The strikes are due to take place on 26 & 31 August and 8 & 9 September. While Guernsey Post will not be on strike, there could be an impact on the island.

“Guernsey Post is not involved in the strikes and will continue to deliver mail as normal. We are working closely with Royal Mail to understand their contingency plans and once the mail is on island, we will deliver it within our usual timeframes,” said a Guernsey Post spokesperson.

“We recommend customers post any non-local items earlier than planned, ahead of the strike dates. We are also encouraging customers to order any foreign currency early, particularly for currencies other than Euros and Dollars, to ensure they arrive in good time.”

More than 100,000 Royal Mail staff are set to strike over pay disputes. In a statement issued on its website, Royal Mail apologised for the inevitable disruption the strikes will cause.

“The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has called on its members who collect, sort and deliver parcels and mail to take strike action… We’re really sorry for the disruption that this strike action is likely to cause to you,” it said.

“We want to reassure you we will do everything we can to minimise disruption and get our services back to normal as quickly as possible.

“Royal Mail has well-developed contingency plans, but they cannot fully replace the daily efforts of its frontline workforce. We will be doing what we can to keep services running, but customers should expect significant disruption.”
