Travel restrictions delay Royal Court trial

Tuesday 16 June 2020

The Royal Court trial of a young man accused of sexual offences against a teenage girl has had to be pushed back, due to Guernsey's current travel restrictions.

The trial was due to begin early next month, but will rely on help from an intermediary in the UK who must be present for the hearings.

But Crown Advocate Fiona Russell said the court "couldn't justify spending States of Guernsey money keeping someone in the island for 14 days" before the trial could begin, and asked that it be adjourned until restrictions are lifted.

However, Judge Russell Finch said he would also have to consider the needs of the defendant, and make sure the trial isn't pushed back far enough that it could become a "disadvantage" to him.

A new date for the trial is yet to be set.

The defendant remains on bail.
