Rosemary Farish: Five things I'd change about Guernsey

Friday 20 July 2018

Retired teacher Rosemary Farish has a passion for Guernsey and has influenced the lives of many pupils in the island having taught drama at Les Beaucamps school for many years.

As a wife, mother and more recently devoted Grandma to 14 month old Athena, she is pretty busy, but we caught up with her in between her grandparent duties to find out what five things she would change about Guernsey.

1. Improve transport links and treatment of disabled

Everyone says improve transport links, but it is not just the cost! Although no one would mind cheaper fares! In fact a block of tickets for locals at special price might help.

As important is, I think, the airlines' treatment of the disabled. It is appalling in this day and age that people are treated the way they are if they need help to get unto the plane.

We need disability laws not guidelines. Why are restaurants being allowed to renovate without lifts?

2. More money for all sports

I’d like to see more money for all sports, to encourage everyone who takes part and to allow for travel to games away.

Sport in school might be the start, but what happens after is important too and football and athletics are not for all.

3. A decent cinema

Long overdue for the island is a decent cinema, with comfy seats and a big screen!

We need somewhere young and old can enjoy a night out that isn’t just about food and drink!

4. Birthrights for service personnel's children

Laws about the birthrights of service personnel’s children should be introduced.

It is not their fault if they are born in a military hospital and who defends us if we were in trouble? The British military. So, if a local person is servingI think their children should not be penalised and should be given local birthright.

5. Sort out secondary education now!

The States need to sort secondary education out sooner rather than later.

I don’t agree with two big schools and I think we missed yet another opportunity to have a really great sixth form college combining FE and A level courses. I loved the community that our smaller schools developed. But whatever is going to happen we need to stop the parents and students feeling like they're in limbo.
