Robot cuts gas servicing down to three days

Tuesday 27 August 2024

Guernsey Energy is using a robot to repair gas pipes which it says can significantly cut road closure times.

The trial is the first of its kind in the Channel Islands, using a technique is called STASS (System Two Assess Survey and Seal) and involves sending a small robot into gas mains.

The robot uses a sealant to internally repair and repatriate joints. Doing this internally aims to minimise the need to dig up roads and reduce traffic disruption.

The trial took place on Vauvert where 39 joints were re-sealed across more than 200 metres of pipe. Traditionally, this would’ve led to 39 separate excavations.

Previously just one excavation resulted in temporary traffic lights at the bottom of Vauvert for two weeks, but by using STASS Guernsey Energy was able to work the main from just one access pit reducing disruption down to three days.

Darryl Goddard, the ccompany's Managing Director, is confident the new technique could make a big impact locally.

“We are very excited about the introduction of STASS, which following this successful trial will become the number one method used to recondition pipes of the right size. Using this new technique ensures that essential maintenance will be completed as quickly as possible,” he said.

“This ingenious technology will not only minimise the amount of disruption for our community, but also benefit the environment and prove to be a more economical option, aligning with our net zero journey as a business.”
