A right royal clean up

Friday 05 July 2024

A small number of boats have to be moved from an area in town which will be central to this month's Royal visit events.

Guernsey Ports has asked the owners of around ten small vessels currently moored on the shingle bank adjacent to the Boat House restaurant on the Crown Pier to move them within the next few days.

The request was shared on social media earlier this week.

The King and Queen are due to visit Guernsey on Tuesday 16 July.

A proportion of their time in Guernsey will be spent on the St Peter Port seafront with political, ceremonial, and community events all planned.

Details for those events were confirmed today with the Royal Couple now known to be attending a special States sitting on the town quay, before a Ceremony of Homage, and a plaque unveiling. They will then walk down the Crown Pier where stalls will be set up showcasing the island's native language, local produce, and locally-made guernseys among other items. There will also be demonstrations and the RNLI lifeboats ‘Spirit of Guernsey’ and ‘Harold Hobbs’, and the St John marine ambulance ‘The Flying Christine’  will be moored alongside the Crown Pier with the crew members among those expected to meet the King and Queen.

With these events all centred around a small area near to the Careening Hard, Ports has asked the owners of the tenders pictured to arrange for their temporary removal by Monday 8 July.

Some people have queried this, asking why the boats need to be moved. Others have pointed out that it is likely to be for security reasons, rather than for aesthetics.
