Return of sustainable food market following hedge veg "boom"

The organiser of Guernsey’s Sustainable Market is looking for stall holders for the first post-covid event.

The market seeks to promote products which are locally made, environmentally friendly and sustainable.

Market organiser Sebastien Black said the pandemic has resulted in an increase in locally made products.

“During and after the lockdowns there has been an absolute boom of hedge-veg style stalls and islanders selling their homemade products,” he said.

“The sustainable market is a fantastic opportunity for people to learn more about sustainability and to help maintain Guernsey’s cultural heritage.”

Mr Black said it was important to promote sustainability: “we live on a small island and a fantastic benefit of that is the ability and power to do so much to promote sustainable products and support local growers, artists and products.

"The market will showcase products including: food and drink, seasonal produce, earth-friendly artisan products, sustainable jewellery and other crafts.

“Sustainability is something that everyone should try to learn more about because the benefit to the island will be long lasting. We have an excellent opportunity to be doing as much as possible to produce things locally and the ventures we have seen coming out of the lockdowns are a testament to that.

"I started making bath oils using locally sourced botanicals. I also grow my own flowers for the oils and use only recycled bottles."

The sustainable market will be held on 24 April from 12:00 to 17:00 at Les Cotils.

"We are encouraging islanders to bring their own carrier bags or containers with them and to travel by foot, pedal power, bus or car share where possible," said Mr Black.

"In additional to the stalls, there will be live music and yoga. This event is for all islanders, from children to the elderly, to learn more about sustainability, help protect our environment and support local suppliers.”

Anyone interested in a stall at the market is asked to email: sebastien.black@outlook.com
