Retirement for surgeon after two decades of local service

Tuesday 05 December 2023

Richard Vowles is putting down his scalpel after spending more than 20 years in the island as a consultant ear, nose, and throat surgeon at the Medical Specialist Group.

He arrived in Guernsey in 1999 from London’s Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear hospital and in that time has overseen service development and a huge increase in procedures performed in the island.

Now Mr Vowles plans to explore the world, complete the Wainwright Fells challenge in the Lake District and pursue his new interest in birdwatching.

His wife, Suzie Dorey, also retired from the MSG last year from her role as a consultant ophthalmologist.

Andrew Pelsar took on the role earlier this month following Mr Vowles’ retirement.

Mr Vowles said his “fulfilling career” serving patients had several proud moments including introducing the Head and Neck service allowing more surgical care to be provided locally.

“Our collaboration with the Southampton Hospital Head & Neck Multidisciplinary team has resulted in better teamwork and more efficient decision-making processes,” he said, adding that his contribution to skin cancer services also saw around 200 to 300 surgeries each year compared to “very few” back in 1999.

“I will miss the operating theatre environment, the clinical work and the interactions with my patients. And of course, my colleagues at the MSG."

MSG Chair Dr Steve Evans paid tribute to his “huge contribution” to medical services, saying he would be missed by many.
