Guernsey will host a world-leading Renoir exhibition in 2023, providing the island with a unique opportunity, says entrepreneur and art collector David Ummels.
Art for Guernsey Founder David Ummels is the driving force behind ‘Renoir 2023’, which constitutes a collaboration between the arts charity and several prestigious international museums.
The exhibition will present the influence of Guernsey on Renoir’s artistic style and career and will consist of 15-20 pieces of Renoir’s artwork.
Pictured: Pierre-Auguste Renoir spent just over a month on the island in 1883 and created only 15 paintings of Moulin Huet. One of these were purchased by a syndicate of local art collectors last year and was put on public display at a free entry exhibition.
Mr Ummels hopes that Guernsey’s unique Renoir heritage will give the island a clear strategic opportunity to stimulate economic growth.
“Culture is a significant dimension of a country’s brand and plays a key role in all flourishing economies," he said.
“Our unique Renoir heritage gives us the opportunity to further develop the Bailiwick as a cultural hub – whose influence is of global importance.”
Wendy Dorey, Chair of the Institute of Directors (IoD) in Guernsey, said: “This exciting initiative gives Guernsey a real opportunity to punch above its weight.
“The importance of cultural diplomacy should not be underestimated, especially as it has been proven to increase exports, attract inward investment and boost tourism.”
Mr Ummels will be attending the IoD’s September breakfast seminar where he will highlight the importance of the upcoming exhibition.
