Regatta returns to Havelet today

Sunday 01 September 2024

The Havelet Regatta returns today for a second year of fun and entertainment with an itinerary to suit all ages.

The event kicks off this morning at 11:00 continuing throughout the day until 19:00. It will once again take place along South Esplanade and Havelet Bay in St. Peter Port.

Following the success of last year's inaugural event, the organisers are keen to make this year bigger and better with a range of activities to suit all ages.

Families are encouraged to arrive early to make the most of the beach activities, which include running races and a community art project, led by Bridget Spinney, involving sand sculpture and scallop shells. The Guernsey Rowing Club will be offering a chance to try out offshore rowing from 1200-1430.

After the tides rise in the early afternoon, there will be swimming and sailing races and a demonstration by the RNLI, who are celebrating 200 years of lifesaving this year.

The South Esplanade will host local food and drink vendors throughout the day, as well as Outdoor Guernsey's 25-feet-tall climbing tower which will be available for adults and children to climb for free. There will also be a fete area offering a collection of traditional games, and and arts & crafts zone involving biscuit decorating, chalk-boards, origami and more.

The Chairodrome Circuit will return with activities for all ages, including the much-loved Office Chair Racing. This is the only paid activity with an entry fee of £10 per team.

Stand-out competitors from the Regatta will be celebrated at the awards ceremony at the end of the day.

Live music will start at 15:00 with performances from GU10, the Button Pushers, and Buffalo Huddleston.

Volunteers will be collecting donations throughout for The Guernsey Cheshire Home. The charity relies on donations and has been working with the organisers to ensure accessibility for all islanders. A viewing platform has been designed specifically to suit attendees with disabilities, and a quiet zone has been set up to accommodate individuals who may benefit from a calmer space. Additional accessible parking spaces have been provided, as well as an accessible toilet.

This year, the Regatta is taking a pro-active approach to sustainability by minimising waste, using sustainable materials, using local talent, and have arranged ample bicycle parking. The organisers are aiming to replicate the efforts made for the Royal Visit, and encourage attendees to arrive by foot, bike or bus.

Note that the South Esplanade and Les Echelons will be closed to traffic from 07:00 to 21:00 today. Access between Havelet, La Vallette, and the Val des Terres will remain open.
