Record reaching use of electricity during January

Friday 12 January 2024

Guernsey Electricity has recorded a peak in island electricity use that matches a record height recorded in 2021.

Demand reached 94.2MW on Wednesday 10 January, which is the same as the highest peak on record which was recorded during a lockdown in 2021.

“The maximum energy we can import through the subsea cable is 60MW, which means that generators at the Vale Power Station were required to meet the additional demand,” said Jon Sexton, Head of Engineering and Design.

“As more Islanders explore options such as electric heating or electric vehicles, such demand is forecast to rise in the future.”

These peaks can lead to interruptions to supply in various places in the island.

“Guernsey Electricity is working to ensure the electrical infrastructure is upgraded and that we maintain sufficient back-up generation on-Island in order to provide security of supply for the increased demand.”
