£15,000 will be spent replanting trees after hundreds were felled or damaged during Storm Ciaran.

The money will go to the Guernsey Nature Commission which will plant saplings in green spaces and woodlands across the island.

The decision was announced by Deputy Mark Helyar, P&R’s Vice-President, as he introduced the draft 2024 Budget for debate in the States this week.

The cash will go towards new trees and woodland management in public areas to mitigate the loss of around 350 trees.

The Commission is an independent body launched this year to promote and enhance the island’s natural environment in partnership with the public, private and third sectors.

Deputy Peter Ferbrache, President of Policy & Resources said while damage from the storm in Guernsey was limited there were still noticeable impacts which should be rectified.

“Our natural environment is part of what makes Guernsey special and I’m very pleased that we can quickly respond by committing to provide this funding,” he added.

The funding has the support of Environment & Infrastructure, with President Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez saying the Commission are the best placed to undertake regeneration works with close links to third sector and community groups focused on nature.
