Prison charity attracts national recognition with the Queen’s Award

Saturday 09 October 2021

A local charity has received the Queen’s Award for voluntary service after successfully promoting the benefits of creative learning in Guernsey’s prison.

Creative Learning in Prison (CLIP) LBG was set up in 2013 to give prisoners a chance to develop skills in Les Nicolles while giving back to the community.

The group works with the management of Guernsey’s only prison to offer educational opportunities with the aim to reduce re-offending.

“We are delighted that the work of CLIP has been recognised in this way,” said Chairman of CLIP, Iain Stokes.

The award was launched in 2002 to recognise the work done by volunteer groups in the British Isles.

The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service was given to 241 charities this year, with it being used to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee.

CLIP was commended for its continued work within the prison, specifically its development of a carpentry workshop for prisoners and its output being used in community projects. Most recently the workshop has contributed benches at La Valette and reading chairs for several schools.

Mr Stokes has thanked those in the community who have made the work of the charity possible.

“I would like to pay tribute to the hard work and commitment of all our volunteers, particularly my fellow board members, Andrew Ozanne OBE and Jurat Jonathan Hooley, without whose drive and passion the development of CLIP would not have been possible,” he said.
