Channel Islands show Pride

Saturday 07 September 2019

A record turn-out is expected at this year's Channel Islands Pride celebrations, which are being held in Jersey today.

Thousands of people gathered for last year's parade in Guernsey, and Pride-goers can expect another day of family-friendly activities and entertainment for 2019.

The fifth annual parade will set off through St Helier at 14:00 and will end up at Les Jardins de la Mer where a 'Pride Village' has been set up.

#PrideOnTheBeach has already been supported by lots of Channel Islands businesses and organisations, including Guernsey's Guille-Alles Library which set up a 'heart wall' to mark the weekend, and Jersey Police who decorated one of their cars with pride colours.

"We have been absolutely blown away by the level of support Pride has received this year from the local community and would like to thank all our sponsors who have generously donated funds and their time to make sure we can put on this community, family-friendly event and keep it free for everyone to attend," said Director of CI Pride, Christian May.

"I can't think of a better way to celebrate the milestone of five years of Channel Islands Pride. It's like nothing we've seen before and we can't wait to welcome everyone - LGBTQ+ or allies, people from Guernsey, Jersey and visitors from overseas - to really celebrate our islands and their diversity."

More than 40 food, drink, charity and merchandise stalls will be on offer at the 'Pride Village', which is open from 14:00 with last orders at 20:30. An area of the village has been dedicated to children, with free face painting, bouncy castles and hula hooping, while another area has been transformed into a 'quiet zone'.

Beach competitions and games will be held between 15:00 and 18:00 and a silent disco will get underway at 16:00.

A range of local and visiting bands will perform throughout the afternoon, with the London Gay Big Band headlining at 15:30.

The CI Pride celebrations will return to Guernsey next year.
