Pride House prepares to open its doors for the Island Games

Thursday 22 June 2023

A Pride House will operate during Guernsey 2023, offering a space to watch livestreams, discussions on inclusion in sport, an art exhibition and its own Gay Games events.

Organisers say that the house will be a welcoming and safe space, open to all athletes, supporters and allies during the Natwest International Island Games next month.

There will be nightly entertainment.

The first ever Pride House was opened during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Vancouver.

Since then, there have been Pride Houses at the Commonwealth Games, European Championships, Women’s World Cup and European Championships.

We’re proud to be opening the first ever, Pride House in Guernsey during the Games, said Ellie Jones, CEO, Liberate.

Obviously, we are creating a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community to experience the Games by watching live streaming of events, but we aim to be so much more than that.

One of our key initiatives is our ground-breaking series of lunchtime talks which feature prominent faces from the local sporting and LGBTQ+ communities, discussing inclusion in sport.

We are very lucky to have Gold and Silver Paralympian, Simon Laurens, a member of the LGBTQ+ community, who will be sharing his experiences of competing at the highest level and a fireside chat with Blake Wilcocks, a local, trans athlete.

In the evenings there will be entertainment from LipSync and Kampioke, spoken word poetry, acoustic sets from local LGBTQ+ artists and the Big Gay Island Games Quiz of the Queer.

Events at the House start when the Games opens on Saturday 8 July and the week ends with a closing party on Friday 14 July, starting at 7pm.

All events will take place at Pride House, Guernsey Chamber, Market Buildings, St Peter Port. For further information and a full schedule, see www.pridehouse.gg.
