Population and average earnings up over the last year

Monday 29 October 2018

More people are living in Guernsey and on average we're earning slightly more money, according to the latest States statistics.

Figures released on a quarterly basis have shown that Guernsey's population increased, with a slight rise in the island's median and average earnings.

Over the course of 2017, Guernsey's population increased by 0.21% or 128 people, compared to a decrease of 0.18% the year before.

That overall increase was despite a natural decrease of 82 and net migration of 210 people.

The way the population is made up has changed very little though, with the number of people between 16 and 64 years old, 'the working age population', remaining static with around two thirds, or 65.9% of the total population, in full time education or employment or were self-employed for at least part of 2017.

The number of people younger than 15, and over 85 decreased slightly though.

31,442 people were employed or self employed in Guernsey last year.

Out of the working age population, nearly 30,000 worked for someone else, while just over 3,000 people were self employed, with just over 2,000 employing businesses in the island.

Finance remained the largest employing sector (6,801 people), while the States of Guernsey is the largest employer in the island for another year.

Median earnings for 2017 were £32,777.

The median earnings of people working in Guersey during the second quarter of 2018 was up compared to the previous quarter but data collated by the States shows earnings have fluctuated over the previous two years.

The data, which is collated by Social Security does not reflect hours worked, or whether an employee may also earn money from self employment or any other sources.
