Police receiving training to challenge inappropriate behaviour

Sunday 03 March 2024

A digital training course is hoped to improve police officer awareness about violence against women and girls, with the hope such behaviours can be challenged more effectively.

Designed by the UK College of Policing, the Upstander Training Programme is being rolled out nationally to ensure police work environments crackdown further on witnessed inappropriateness.

Guernsey Police has developed a strategy for tackling such violence and has been focused on bringing more sexual offenders to justice while supporting victims before and after they’ve come forward to report.

But the training has been rolled out due to national failures in services across the British Isles, building on ethics and response plans.

The key aims are to ensure officers act “with courage, respect and empathy towards our colleagues”, and “have the capability and motivation to challenge and stand up to discrimination in all its forms”.

Deputy Chief Officer Ian Scholes said: “It is all too easy for someone to notice inappropriate behaviour, but to think someone else will deal with it and not say anything. We must all feel able to stand up and call it out.

He said this would apply whether that be sexism, racism, homophobia, or any similar behaviours or offences.

We are already fortunate in Guernsey Police to be surrounded by a strong team who value fairness and do challenge poor behaviour, however we always want to be doing more to ensure we are informed and at the cutting edge of these issues.”
