"Get him off my legs or I'll kill him"

A 19-year-old, who was reported to Guernsey Police by concerned members of the public, has been given a suspended sentence for assaulting an officer.

Carson Le Prevost was spotted by multiple people on 14 September as he walked topless down Cambridge Park Road, shouting aggressively and punching parked cars.

After receiving a call from a bystander, a police officer went to the scene to speak with the defendant, who had reportedly drunk a potentially "fatal" amount of alcohol.

When asked what was going on, Le Prevost swore at the officer and pushed the side of his face, just catching the officer's eye with his finger.

Although the officer warned Le Prevost not to touch him, the defendant went on to jab him multiple times.

At this point, the officer decided to arrest Le Prevost, who continued to swear whilst trying to get away. Another officer attempted to restrain his legs, to which the defendant said, "Get him off my legs or I'll kill him," followed by "You need to get him last least halfway across the island or I will slit his throat".

In his police interview, Le Prevost said he had no recollection of the incident and hadn't intended to harm anyone, but that he had no explanation for his actions.

"I came to work this morning intending to send you straight to youth detention," said Judge Graeme McKerrell on sentencing. However, after hearing more about the defendant's mental health from defence Advocate Lockwood, he decided not to send Le Prevost to custody.

He was given a three month suspended sentence, which he will have to serve if he commits any further crimes within the next 18 months, along with an 18 month probation order.

"You did come very close today to going straight to youth detention," added Judge McKerrell. "I'm told it will be a struggle for you to complete the probation order. That may be, but you're going to have to struggle.

"Your future is in your hands."

Judge Graeme McKerrell commended the officer involved for his patience. He suffered no lasting effects from the assault.
