Hundreds of people have signed a new petition calling for Alderney’s runway to be repaired immediately.
A project to revamp the airport, including the runway, stalled when the prospective bill soared in cost by £13m. and has been put in further doubt with Guernsey’s Policy & Resources Committee having to reprioritise other projects after failing to steer through an income tax hike.
Alderney were due to put £3.5m. towards the project, which has now been costed at £37m.
Nearly 400 people have signed a petition calling for work to repair the runway to begin.
"In order to save our failing economy, prevent more families leaving our island and encourage inward investment in the island of Alderney, our lifeline runway must be resurfaced immediately," it says.
"If this work does not start in Quarter 1 of 2025 there is a serious risk to the entire island's economy and a risk to life if the CAA force closure of lifeline our airport.
"Our island does not have the luxury of a regular passenger boat service in the winter due to our poor weather. So the airport is our only way to access critical healthcare services included emergency services.
"This petition is aimed beyond the States of Deliberation in Guernsey as they do not seem to care. We will take it to the UK Government and even to King Charles III if we have to."
The petition, which can be viewed here, opened on 29 December and the organisers have urged people to share it "worldwide".
