The Coutanchez joins “a large club” of roads that would benefit from safety changes according to the President of E&I.

Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez spoke about the difficulty of upgrading the safety aspects of roads in response to a question from Deputy Lester Queripel.

He was raised a concern after Deputy de Sausmarez’s Environment and Infrastructure update to the States.

“Pedestrians take a huge gamble when they walk along the Coutanchez... has the Committee considered installing speed humps?” he asked.

Deputy de Sausmarez said: “I share Deputy Queripel’s concerns about the Coutanchezit's a stretch I’m not comfortable walking down myself, and we’re aware a lot of other people who have complained about it.”

[However] it joins a large club in that respect – the list of roads we’d like to make safety changes to is a long one.

The main area of priority relate to the Better Transport Plan [for the north] and the main local centres, particularly around schools.”

She said the Route des Coutanchez is “on our list, but it is not top of our list”.

When speaking about the possibility of speed humps, she said they aren’t as simple to install as people might think.

When it comes to speed humps – they tend to be not at all supported by the blue light services, so we have to consider a range of different calming measures and different design approaches.

Just installing speed humps is not an easy thing to do. Not least because the blue light services are not fans – even though arguably, calming traffic reduces the amount of work they need to do.”
