From today, part of Alderney's Victoria Street will be pedestrianised on Saturday morning's for four weeks under a trial scheme.
It's part of a wider 'traffic improvement programme' underway in the island.
For now, the lower part of Victoria Street will be closed to vehicles between 09:00 and 13:00 on Saturday 14, 21, 28 December and 4 January.
As Alderney's main shopping street, the idea is to allow pedestrians to have priority between Les Roquettes and Ollivier Street during the peak Christmas shopping and socialising period.
However, this has been described as a “soft opening” before an additional trial takes place during the island’s busier periods – notably the summer months, especially around Alderney Week.
The pedestrianisation trial came through the General Services Committee's work to implement a phased traffic improvement programme - following survey results which showed that people wanted issues such as parking, the number and size of vehicles, policing an abandoned vehicles, to be addressed.
Proposals were drawn up in consultation with the States Works Department and Bailiwick Law Enforcement and included short-, medium- and long-term solutions.
The community will have the opportunity to provide feedback to the States on this trial scheme.
