£500,000+ given to mental health initiatives

Wednesday 04 December 2024

More than half a million pounds has been given to good causes helping to improve mental health outcomes across the island.

The donation was made by the Social Investment Fund, supported by the Channel Islands Lottery.

Guernsey Mind and The Youth Commission are the local charities benefitting from the donations.

Guernsey Mind has received £274,000 to provide one-to-one support, facilitate support groups, and conduct training and awareness-raising events. The goal is to improve the mental well-being of individuals facing mental health challenges in Guernsey.

The Youth Commission has used its £300,000 grant to implement early intervention programs for secondary school students experiencing mild to moderate anxiety, low mood, or behavioural concerns. By addressing these issues early on, the Commission aims to prevent more serious mental health problems from developing.

The Channel Islands Lottery works closely with SIF, as well as the Jersey Community Foundation and the Association of Jersey Charities, to distribute Lottery funds to charitable causes across the Channel Islands. In addition to Lottery funds, SIF's grants are also funded through the Guernsey Probate Registry and a portion of seized asset proceeds.

Chair of SIF’s directors, the Very Reverend Tim Barker, said: “We’re pleased to have been able to support Guernsey Mind and The Youth Commission with these grants. The work they do is crucial for building resilience and improving mental wellbeing across our community.

“Mental health is something that touches everyone, and we’re confident these funds help provide meaningful, lasting support to those who need it most. SIF is proud to stand behind their work and invest in a stronger, healthier future for our island.”

Jon Taylor, the Head of Lottery for States of Guernsey, added: “It’s fantastic to see Channel Islands Lottery proceeds supporting such important local initiatives. Our aim is to make a positive impact in the community, and these grants for mental health align perfectly with that mission.

“Both Guernsey Mind and The Youth Commission provide invaluable services, and it’s rewarding to know our Lottery proceeds directly benefit Islanders facing mental health challenges. Thank you to SIF for their hard work in managing applications, making funding decisions and distributing grants supported by the Channel Islands Lottery to good causes in Guernsey.”
