Notes from young islanders

Thursday 14 December 2023

Artist Sian Jones has worked with young people to create the latest phase in her Notes to Islanders campaign, with new motivational quotes from those very young people now up around the island.

Miss Jones works at The Youth Commission, and is also a recognised artist locally with contributions to numerous exhibitions over the years along with her Notes project.

The first Notes to Islanders went on public display around Guernsey in 2018.

Miss Jones used colourful boards adorned with motivational and emotive slogans to inspire islanders. There were just 10 at first which were placed around St Peter Port mainly with others put up at events such as Chaos, Sark Summer Festival, the Scarecrow Festival in Torteval and the Vale Earth Fair.

The idea was to use the bright posters to help raise mental health awareness in Guernsey.

Miss Jones has updated the campaign since and now she has updated it further by using quotes from the young people she works with at The Youth Commission.

"Following Mental Health Awareness Day (10 October) the Emotional and Mental Health Practitioners team at The Youth Commission have collaborated on a joint venture with Notes to Islanders, to get the voices of the young people heard," explained Miss Jones.

The EMHP team went out to secondary schools across the island and asked young people what they would say to a friend in need of emotional support.

“After running a similar campaign in the summer, we were overwhelmed with the response from the islands," said Miss Jones.

"Teenagers have so much to say, and it's great to be a vessel for their voices to be heard.”

The response was overwhelming with more than 400 contributions.

They can all be seen hanging as baubles on the Youth Commission Christmas tree at Beau-Sejour.

Miss Jones said 14 quotes were selected by The Youth Commission to be printed and displayed on Notes to Islanders boards around the island.

These are now up in some prominent locations, particularly those frequented by young people such as the Jubilee Skate Park and shopping areas.

Miss Jones said they will also be shared via the Youth Commission's social media pages.

"Keep an eye out for these motivational quotes round the island," she said.
