Not long left to enter local community art competition

Wednesday 03 April 2019

The Guernsey Arts Commission is reminding local artists to get creative with the chance to win £500 and have artwork displayed on the Market Terrace.

Working in partnership with the Committee for Health and Social Care, the commission is asking people to take inspiration from Dying Matters Awareness Week and come up with ideas for artwork that could be used to promote it.

The competition is part of the 'Going Out with the Tide' festival, which was launched in Guernsey last year and encourages more talk around death, dying and bereavement.

"Thinking about and talking about our own death and the people we care about dying can be scary, painful and uncomfortable - but also helps us appreciate what we have," said Karen Leach from Adult Community Services. "One thing is for sure, it feels better having this conversation together in the open.

"We all have known someone who has died, someone who has been bereaved and someone who will miss us when we're gone. And yet, nearly all of us struggle with thinking about, planning and talking about death. Especially with the people we love the most. As part of Dying Matters week in Guernsey we are creating events and making space for these conversations."

Submissions for the competition can be in any 2D visual format. The two winning ideas will be displayed on a 9ft by 12ft structure in Town throughout Dying Matters week, between 13 and 19 May.

Russ Fossey from the Guernsey Arts Commission said: "We are delighted to be partnering with Health and Social Care on this project. The arts can bring a perspective on the topic which makes it easier for many of us to engage with. It can trigger deep introspective thought, giving a focus and clarity that can make it easier for many to join in with the conversation."

The opportunity is open to students, professional and amateur artists and any photos should be of high resolution. Applicants should send a written explanation of what 'Going Out with the Tide' means to them, and this will accompany their artwork if chosen.

"This project is a great example of working in partnership to support our community to hold a potentially difficult conversation," added Culture Arts and Health Manager Lottie Barnes. "It also highlights the important role of the arts within health. We are really looking forward to seeing the submissions."

All applications should be in by Friday 5 April and selected artists will be informed next week, with artwork to be received by 6 May.
